Barker, Eugene Campbell

Barker, Eugene Campbell, 18741956, American historian, b. Walker co., Tex. His distinguished teaching career, begun in 1899, was almost entirely at the Univ. of Texas. An outstanding social historian, Barker wrote about the period of American settlement in Texas and about the Texas Revolution. Notable among his works are a biography of Stephen F. Austin (1925, repr. 1968), Mexico and Texas 1821–1835 (1928, repr. 1965), and an edition (with Amelia W. Williams) of the writings of Sam Houston (8 vol., 1938–43, repr. 1969).
